Accept or change?

What does this involve?

Sometimes we struggle with circumstances and events which are outside of our control, such as a bereavement or illness of a loved one. And sometimes we have the power to change the things we’re struggling with, like loneliness or lack of self-esteem. This technique is from Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), which emphasises acknowledging and accepting the truths upon which your thoughts, feelings and behaviours are based.

Understanding where your emotions come from and why they arise can give you the motivation to move in the right direction to make practical changes – without any self-judgment.

When shouldn’t I do this?

If you are currently struggling with symptoms of anxiety, like a racing heart, you might find it helpful to complete a relaxation exercise before you try this.
